Homework
Colonies

This week, to support our work on the American Revolution that begins after the vacation, I would like you to continue to read about, and make a travel guide for a tourist to visit the Colonies on the eve of the Revolution (1769). You have already started this work at the Colonies Station in school this week.
Choose from the Northern Colonies, the Middle Colonies, and the Southern Colonies. Your guide should have an introduction, and should include three of the following choices:
-
Which places to visit
-
How to get around
-
Local customs and manners
-
What to wear
-
What to eat and drink
-
What to see and do
-
Sports and recreation
-
Where to stay
-
How to stay safe and healthy
-
Money
Each section should take about one hour to design and write. The reading will probably take 15-30 min. per section.
Finished Travel guides are due in Friday, February 17th.

Last Week's Project
Decisions, Decisions!

Job 1. A story about decisions!
Write a story about a time you may have made a poor decision. Poor
decisions could include: doing
something someone told you not to; playing a prank on someone; saying or
doing something
that you knew was wrong; going somewhere you were not supposed to; etc.
Growing up, I remember denying flushing Annette Jones' hat down the
toilet. I swore I hadn't done it - until I confessed, as my Mum
confronted the Principal of the school! Mum was NOT happy.
Focus on the following:
• Set up the situation as a sequence of events that builds tension
• Describe your inner thoughts as you tried to decide what to do
• Explain the consequences of your decision and what you learned from it
When you revise your story, make sure there is a theme or message that
readers will
understand from your writing.
Job 2. Character Choice Comic
Draw a comic strip of the scene showing the main character
(you) making the difficult decision. Try to capture the emotions of the
character in the artwork. Vary how you show the characters (try
depicting your character from different angles!)
Look at action comics to inspire you.
Job 3. Self portrait!
Create a piece of art that represents the two sides of you: your good
side and your 'other' side
(we all have them!) It can be an illustration, a sculpture, or a type of
model. Make sure
viewers can recognize your two sides as separate but also part of one
being. Is one stronger
than the other? Are they equal? What are they like? Try to capture their
essence in art!
