Defying Gravity Gallery
Thank you all for coming to the show.
I had a great time working on this show with the students. By the time I saw the last show, I was watching the team and the audience instead of the action. It was amazing to see the determination and magic of this group; to see John Charles singing along with Rachel's song, to see Nicky and Jordan grooving with their images during the Talent Show, to watch the talented, charismatic actors hit their performances perfectly time after time, to watch the stilting team execute their scenes perfectly yet again, as they did throughout: Leila, Brenda, Regine, and Emma - actual titans, to watch Matt and Gabe weave exactly the right lighting to enhance the set images, to hear Conor and Sullivan get the music perfect yet again. I must admit, as they sang the Defying Gravity song for the last time, I found my eyes welling up with pride in our achievement.
I cursed myself for not giving the adults a guided tour of the coordination of the show at its end. Here's an example of what was involved: Every time one of the 'freeze' events happened, the actors on stage had to coordinate their action with the two lights people, the three multimedia people, and the two music group members. For six shows in a row they hit it perfectly. The whole 'freeze' idea arose without any real direct planning. It was Matt and Gabe, Jordan, Nicky and J.C., Conor and Sully, Leila and Emma, and all the other actors who invented it in a beautiful organic experience. That's just one example from forty eight minutes of complicated, choreographed, improvised, truly excellent teamwork.
I loved this show, and I'm deeply proud of each and every student involved in it.
