What does each student need for Mr. Allen's Class?

  • Writing Journal: Each student needs to have a journal/subject notebook for all rough draft work, including writing, drawing, etc. This is the primary source for all the student's work in the class. Selected work is improved and redrafted into portfolios, published to the website, etc.

  • Reading Journal: Each student needs to keep records of their reading. I'll be going over the format in class. Parents and teachers need to sign this record weekly. The journal should be moving between home and school regularly. This is an important record of the student's reading behavior.

  • Portfolio: Each student needs a 1 or 2 inch ring binder with plastic insert covers - this will be one of the student's portfolios for the year. Students will also be maintaining an online portfolio of their work, and this will be their primary portfolio. Periodically, the student will print some of their best work for this 'hard copy' portfolio. Also, assessment items will be included. At teacher parent conferences, both portfolios will be available. At the end of the year, the students will have a wonderful record of the year!

  • Homework storage: Each student needs a storage system for completed and graded homework projects: I need the students to keep all homework projects throughout the year for parent and teacher perusal. Either a second binder in school, or a parent operated storage location at home, strike me as the best options.

That's about it. The school provides the math journals the students will be using. I have all the pens, pencils, rulers, etc. they need, although many students prefer to have their own implements. As long as they have their reading and writing journals, portfolio binder, and a successful collection point for homework projects, they should be fine.
