Who can build a wind powered vehicle that can travel furthest, fastest, and survive in head on crashes? This was the challenge.

The idea came out of the story the 'Windsinger', by William Nicholson. Our intrepid heroes are about to be cast onto 'land sailers', driverless, wind powered machines hurled across the dusty plains by the giant wheeled city, Ombaraka at the identical land vehicles of an enemy rolling city, Omchaka. The vehicles will crash together. Whichever city has most vehicles left still rolling after the crashes wins the battle. In the story, these competitions are presented as a bloodless alternative to war!

The students broke into teams to create their machines. Vehicles could be entered into up to three competitions: the distance challenge, the speed challenge, and the crash challenge.

Here are the competitors. You can click on the pictures for a word from their sponsors.
